Judge M. Scott Ramey

M. SCOTT RAMEY, PRESIDING JUDGE

SYLVANIA MUNICIPAL COURT

 

Sylvania Municipal Court Judge M. Scott Ramey was born in Toledo Ohio and graduated from Thomas A. DeVilbiss High School in 1966. He then attended Depauw University in Greencastle, Indiana completing his bachelors degree with honors in 1970.  Judge Ramey received his law degree from Duke University located in Durham, North Carolina in 1973. 

Judge Ramey began his legal career as an associate of Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick in Toledo, Ohio.  He was admitted to practice law in the State of Ohio in 1973 and in 1977 admitted to practice law in the State of Michigan. In 1975 he was in private law practice with attorney Charles Hunt.  Judge Ramey was appointed as Prosecutor of the Sylvania Municipal Court from 1975 until 1987. In 1987 Judge Ramey was first elected to the Sylvania Municipal Court for a six year term commencing January 1, 1988.  He was re-elected in 1993, 1999 and 2005 and is currently serving his fourth term of office.

He and his wife, Rebeccah, are the parents of three daughters, Jennifer, Gretchen and Megan.

The Judge's professional activities include;  Ohio Municipal and County Judges Association where he has served on the legislative committee, Ohio Bench and Bar Conference, American Bar Association, Ohio State Bar Association, the Toledo Bar Association select committee on jail overcrowding and serves as a board member for the Community Corrections Planning Board and the Safety Council of Northwest Ohio. Judge Ramey is also a fellow member of the Ohio State Bar Foundation.

The Judge was also a member of: The Toledo Bar Association: Municipal Court Committee, The Bench Bar/Kiroff Committee, Lawyers Advisory and Ethics Committee, Speakers Bureau on Law Related School Education Committee, Lawyers and Realtors Committee, Lawyer Referral and the Information Service Committee.

The Judge has been active in community service serving as a member of the Sylvania Rotary club since 1976, Director from 1985-1987 and 2005-Present, President elect 1987-1988 and President from 1988-1989.  He also was a member of the Board of Directors of the Sylvania Community Rotary Foundation from 1988 to 1995. Since 1976 he has participated in the Sylvania Chamber of Commerce as a member and served as Director from 1980-1982.  In 1982 he became a member of the Sylvania Area Community Improvement Corporation and was Director from 1982-1988.  He became a member of the Sylvania Jaycees in 1976 serving as Secretary from 1976-1977 and Internal Vice President from 1977-1978.  He became a member of the Holland-Springfield Chamber of Commerce in 1992 and served on the Board of Directors from 1999-2001; was a member of the Holland-Springfield Drug Task Force from 1993 to 1995;  and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Springfield Dollars for Scholars from 1995 to 2000. Judge Ramey is also currently on the Board of Directors of the Flower Hospital Foundation.

Judge Ramey was awarded the National Commission Against Drunk Driving Commendation Certificate in 1993.

He enjoyed coaching softball for 9 Years and Soccer for 10 Years.

The Judge has been a member of Sylvania First United Methodist Church since 1977 and has been a member of the Board of Trustees.  He has also served terms as Family Coordinator, and also on the Pastor Parish Relations Committee, Endowment Committee, Finance Committee and on the Administrative Council.

Since Judge Ramey was first elected he has, among other things, started a probation department, instituted a community service program, commenced a school to Court program for fifth and sixth grade students in the Court district, started a domestic violence counseling program at the Court, and in conjunction with other area judges established a victim assistance program.
